Where are you?

Where are you? It’s one of the oldest questions in recorded history and  also one of the most profound.

The original question, asked by God to Adam, was not for God’s own personal information but rather for Adam’s sake. At the time Adam and his wife were hiding behind bushes and covering their vulnerable parts with fig leaves.

God’s question really had nothing to do with physical location. He knew full well where Adam and his wife were hiding. The question was designed to direct Adam’s attention toward his new propensity for self deceit.

Let’s look at this question in terms of your life’s purpose…

The essence of personal growth is about getting from here to there. If you don’t know what you want in life one thing is for sure…You will end up getting what other people want.

Personal growth starts with personal responsibility…Choosing one destination to drive towards. It takes courage to make a life declaration of clear intention! Choosing to go one place in life, and making it a priority, automatically precludes all kinds of detours that you might otherwise take.

When it comes to your life’s purpose, the destination you choose should not be arbitrary, but one that is aligned with God’s intentions for placing you here. The good news is that He is more than willing to share His intentions with you as you develop and deepen a relationship with Him (and this is one area I’d certainly like to help you with).

Knowing where you want to go, however is only one of two points on a map that are necessary for a successful trip. In order to get from here to there, you must first take an honest evaluation of where you are.

The road to purpose involves bringing every aspect of who you are into alignment with where you want to go. It therefore requires encounters with truth in multiple areas of your life.

If, for instance, you decide that better physical health should be a priority in your life, you will need look in the mirror and be honest about your self-destructive patterns in this area.

Talk is cheap when it comes to life transformation. Saying that you intend to do something and actually doing it are two very different things. In the end what you actually do will prove where your deepest loyalties lie. You  must battle your own internal competing commitments in order to get to where you want to go.

Following through with our example, you can love the IDEA of being in shape but love comfort eating more! No shame, blame or guilt intended here…but things are what they are. Life is about choices and there are costs and rewards with each one that you make. Some take you closer to your destination and some lead you farther away.

So have the courage to ask yourself these questions today:

  1. What is the overall direction you need to take in order to align with God’s purposes for your life? Don’t panic if you can’t answer this question right now. I’d love to help you out in this regard. I ask simply to get you thinking along these lines.
  2. What is one area of your life that you would like to grow in right now?
  3. Where are you (truthfully) in this area right now?

Once you can answer questions 2 and 3 you’ll be able to draw a road map to get you there. Now not all maps are created equally, but we’ll talk about that at another time. Blessings…R.P.P.

Earlier this morning, I was able to share with a friend of mine this same theory/truth. I told her that the valley she is in at the moment is a higher place than the last “peak” she was on. The valleys are the places where we need to stop, rest, and re-evaluate our direction, just to make sure we are still on our way to the top of the mountain. It is here where we learn the MOST about “where” and “who” we really are. Instead of filling our minds with depression/pity, we can rejoice, knowing God has intended for us to reach the next “peak”. The valley is a place of rest. Our thoughts will either enable us to continue, or keep us in the valley. Many die in the valley when they run out of food and warmth. The “Top” is not reached in a strait shot! Thank God for the valleys…. make the most of them
